How often do you hear someone complain about how annoying a man's voice is, or how they refuse to vote for a him because he is hideously ugly? Do you hear a lot of male politicians being criticized because they are fat? These are sexist comments that the Heather Ryan for Congress Campaign deals with every day. However, in an astounding act of defiance, Heather responded today to those critical of her weight at a press conference.
This morning at 10:00 AM Heather confirmed that she is five months pregnant and is not amused by Whitfield's supporters and staff who have made physical features a key topic during this campaign.
"When our economy is reeling from the worst economic crisis in modern history and when our men and women are dying in an unending war in Iraq, I believe our discourse should be about more than weight." Heather said in a statement.
In an interesting timing twist, KET Public Television called just before the press conference to inform the Ryan campaign that her opponent, Ed Whitfield, declined the televised debate scheduled for Monday, October 13, 2008. The reason for why Mr. Whitfield will not attend is unclear, but what is certain is that he owes the people of Kentucky's First Congressional District answers to their questions about the current economic mess but has thus ignored.
Please be sure to tune in to KET on Monday, October 13, 2008 at 8:00 CST to watch the "debate". Heather will be there, even if Ed Whitfield is too much of a coward to attend.
With great astonishment I watch, with the rest of the world, as the banking industry melts away before our very eyes. Simultaneously, the Bush administration and the Republican forces in Congress insist that we must "bail out" the Wall Street tycoons who created this world wide crisis with a blank check and no stipulations. To say I am aghast at this sheer lack of leadership, judgment and scruples would be a gross understatement.
First, please note that I am in no way convinced that this "Billionaire Bail Out" will even work. Each Bush-Bail-Out to date (ie. Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, AIG) was supposed to end the hemorrhaging of the banking industry; yet each has had little effect. Each time the Bush Administration tries to shovel a load down our throats, as the unwashed masses, we are simply expected to accept it and be merry? Surely you jest!
Now, make no mistake, my opponent, Ed Whitfield, has consistently sided with the Republicans, smack dab on the side of big business with the deregulation of every conceivable industry. Do I believe he is partially to blame for this debacle? Absolutely! Not only is Exxon Eddie bought and paid for by special interest groups, but his personal portfolio investments insist that the stock market soar with reckless regard.
Undoubtedly, Congress will vote to burden the average citizen for generations because of the greed and corruption of those who have had so much power for so long. Even more depressing is that this added financial burden will be used as an excuse to ignore the needs of veterans, the uninsured, poor children and families, crumbling infrastructure and every other social need for years and years to come. If this doesn't wake up American Citizens this election year, I simply don't know if anything ever will.
My family was directly affected by domestic violence when my mom's significant other punched her in the face and broke her cheekbone in three places when I was a teenager. That was just one of the times he beat her. That was just one of the times our family was torn apart by violence. He swore he was sorry, he swore he would never do it again, until of course, he did.
Domestic violence is a very serious issue that has effected me directly.
Ed Whitfield's recent attacks on my character because I performed in the play, "The Vagina Monologues" as a benefit for the Merryman House Domestic Violence Shelter is a disgusting display of how low he will stoop in an attempt to ruin an opponent's reputation at any cost. As far as I'm concerned, these attacks are yet another form of abuse toward women. I am not ashamed of the work I did to help end violence against women and I will never apologize for my compassion for battered women and children. Instead, I will await notification from Mr. Whitfield's campaign headquarters apologizing for their lack of judgement and stating that they made a gift to:

How exciting is it that we officially have a new campaign headquarters! No longer are we vexed to operate out of my extremely humble dwelling. Now we have a fabulous building on Paducah's amazing South Side complete with flags, campaign materials and office supplies.
The Grand Opening Celebration was Thursday, August 21st (our baby's 1st Birthday). To add to the excitement over 40 supporters celebrated this monumentus event with us! They brought their enthusiasm and check books - for what more could one ask? Together we dined on the finer things in life like hot dogs and lumps of cheese. Who says Democrats don't know how to throw a party?
One of the best aspects of the evening was that WE GOT PRESS! The Paducah Sun and WPSDTV came out and took photos/video. Though WPSD didn't run any of the footage they filmed while at the headquarters, we're grateful for every little morsel of press we receive.
Please feel free to call and/or stop by the headquarters. Our new phone number is 270-898-8977 and our address is 4509 Clarks River Road, Paducah, KY 42003.
